“Are you ready?” G looks at me.

Funny how I landed myself in this spot. I was never the little girl who dreamed of white frock weddings. I argued with my friends the pointless purpose of monogamy. I disagreed with my mother about the sanctity (sanity) of marriage. And then I met G and, no, he didn’t convince me that I was wrong, but I would eventually learned.

The truth is, all those years I thought that being in a relationship was a sign of weakness. Dependency. Vulnerability. I’ve seen my girl friends cry when their boyfriends broke their hearts. I’ve sat with boy friends when their girlfriends broke theirs. I questioned the whole heartache and pain. I thought it was all very stupid.

No one actually told me that we had to work at a relationship.

With G, I’ve learned to open my heart.

I’ve learned that when it’s easier to give up, it’s also braver to hold on. I’ve learned that taking is easy, but giving can be challenging. Many times I thought “It would be easier if I did it myself.” But I’ve learned it’s not about the task of completion that mattered, but allowing someone to help you that did.

We are all strong intelligent human beings. However, I’ve learned that when you worked together – as friends, as family, as a couple, as siblings, as colleagues… Life unfolds its beauty that sometimes even surprises us.

So, I’m learning every day. I doubt marriage will be the ‘happily ever after’. Will there be rainbows and flowers, puppies and chocolates every single minute? I doubt so too. But G, am I ready?

I’ve never been so ready in my whole life.

Oh yes, before I go I must say ‘Hullo! to Aunty Izlan and clan’. :D Thank you for checking out my humble website.

Aunty Izlan is not my biological aunt. She’s in fact, my neighbour. There’s this whole confusing Asian thing that confuses alot of people as well. Nevertheless, Aunty Izlan is a very important person in my childhood. Thinking about all those afternoons in her kitchen, ‘helping’ with the Raya cookies always makes me a little homesick. Ahhh… the smell of freshly made cookies wafting in the air. Priceless.

Thank you Mr. Jon Low who flew all the way from Malaysia and made time to take our engagement photos. Bless your kind heart and incredible talent.

  2. Oh Mabs… it’s beautiful. *sniff* Your words brought a tear to my eye. Or two.

Congratulations to you and G – you two make a special couple. :)
And tho’ I’m not sure about the puppies (because they grow up too fast!), but the rainbows and sparks will be there on all days of your lives. Look out for it!

  6. Aww… Mabs what you wrote is so honest and beautiful. *Sniff*. If I am not careful I might end up embracing being a romantic again. Sigh… at this day and age it’s a struggle to still believe BUT once in a blue moon you get a little surprise that makes you WANT to believe again. And this time it’s your entry and the happy pictures. Thanks for making me see it’s all possible! The pictures look fab but the most important thing is that you guys looks so in love and nobody can fake all that.

All the best on your new journey and I have a feeling you guys are gonna do great. You have always been a practical soul but don’t forget to let some rainbows in!

Mon: It’s OK to embrace the romantic. It really is. I thought falling in love wasn’t my cup of tea, and to my surprise it actually is. We just have to keep the heart open y’know?
